Starting the Year Off Right
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10
Whether we recognize it or not, prayer undergirds everything we do as the church. With that in mind we are beginning a congregation wide prayer initiative for 2018. Prayer is one action that can involve the whole congregation, including our children and our shut-ins. Prayer cards were placed in the bulletins this past Sunday. I am including the prayer below for those who did not receive them. They will also be available on the back table in the sanctuary and in the chapel. You are invited to pray this prayer every day at 4pm as an invitation to “come and see” and stay with Jesus for a while. If you cannot pray at 4pm. then please choose a time that does work for you.
Getting into the discipline of prayer is not always the easiest. You will find though as you continue to flex your “prayer muscles” you will begin to get into a rhythm that will become natural for you. Prayer nurtures our relationship with God and with Christ. There is not ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to pray. All we are called to do is to come before God with open hearts.
Christ, who insistent call disturbs our unsettled lives:
Give us discernment to hear your word,
to see the vision for First UMC
to be the church you dream of,
grace to relinquish our expectations,
and courage to follow empty handed wherever you lead,
that the voice of your truth and love may reach the community of Washington, and the ends of the earth. Amen.
I am excited to be taking this prayer journey together as we discern God’s vision for us!
Grace and peace,
