Wonder How You Can be a Hero?
Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. (Proverbs 22:6)
Vacation Bible School is just around the corner. It just seems like yesterday that Jill Motzer, Amy Lolley and I were heading to the VBS Showcase at First UMC in Monongahela. All three of us were drawn to Cokesbury’s Hero Central. What is Hero Central about? The promotion material for Hero Central states, “Take kids on awesome adventures alongside some of their favorite Bible heroes and discover the qualities that make us truly heroic in God.” Throughout the week the kids will learn about being a hero through the Bible verse from Psalm 34:14, “Do good! Seek peace and go after it!”
Wonder how you can be a hero? You can be a hero by showing up to Vacation Bible School that will be held here at First Church on June 19-23. We are tasked with raising our children in the ways of God. That responsibility is with every one of us. The responsibility does not just fall to parents or to those who are young or to those who are old or to those who are good with kids. We always have a reason why someone else should do it, but we ALL have a responsibility.
Maybe you can give a day out of your week during VBS or two or three? Or maybe you can help out all week? Whatever you can do will be very appreciated and will be blessed by God. Maybe you can’t help out with VBS? Know what? There will be more than enough opportunities in the fall with Sunday School and nursery.
Ministry takes many hands, not just a few. God can take whatever we have to offer and when we allow God to bless our offering it becomes more than enough. That is the miracle of God’s divine abundance. We hear about the miracle of God’s abundance in the story of the Feeding of the Five Thousand. In John’s Gospel Andrew offers up a little boy’s lunch. Jesus takes it and blesses it. And somehow it is enough, and not just enough but more than enough. There are scraps left over. Even the scraps are a part of God’s divine abundance.
We have the blessing of participating in God’s divine abundance when we give of our time, talents, gifts, our presence and our witness. May this summer be a time of participating in God’s divine abundance and sharing in God’s great love together!
Grace and peace,
